one2one

It is essential for a manager to know the strengths and improvement potential of each employee – as well as the threats and opportunities associated with ...

... that employee. Threats and opportunities may, for example, be defined as how critical to the operation the employee is, and his or her development potential.

Every part of an organisation – a department, a unit, a team – has a mission which must be accomplished – and every member of staff has an individual goal linked to that mission. The manager’s task is to follow up his/her employees on a regular basis and to provide the support necessary to ensure that the mission is accomplished.

A manager who knows his or her staff’s abilities and motivations, as well as how they operate, is in an excellent position to succeed in the organisation. For a manager, it is essential to find the “key” to each employee, as this enables the manager to provide the employee with the right opportunity not only to deliver a great result for the operation, but to grow as a member of staff – perhaps even move on to other, greater tasks.

one2one is an extremely effective follow-up technique for a manager.

Follow-ups must be individualised and based on what the manager needs to achieve in following up the member of staff. Some employees may have greater need for regular follow-ups than others and sometimes a manager may notice a greater need for regular follow-ups than the individual employee may feel is necessary. In both cases, one2one is the ideal approach.

The conversation and follow-up technique in one2one are based on five principles, all of which are essential for successful one2one follow-up.

The follow-up looks at

  • the employee’s work situation, based on a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis carried out by the employee on his/her own activities
  • the current situation with respect to the employee’s tasks and special projects or assignments
  • what has happened since the last follow-up, based on the employee’s plans at the time
  • what the future plans are
  • what support the employee needs from the manager to meet delivery deadlines

Book another meeting if there is need to discuss other issues or areas. one2one meetings are concerned solely with following up the employee’s activities!
